1. Introduction

Energy2 Ltd is a producer of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and associated electrical equipment placed on the United Kingdom market. This statement sets out our obligations to our customers and the environment under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013 (SI 2013/3113) (the "WEEE Regulations") and the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 (SI 2009/890) (the "Batteries Regulations"), together with the take-back service we make available to end-users of our products.

2. Our regulatory obligations

As a registered producer of batteries and electrical equipment in the United Kingdom, Energy2 Ltd complies with its statutory obligations to:

  • Finance the collection, treatment, recycling and environmentally sound disposal of waste batteries and waste electrical equipment arising from products we have placed on the market.
  • Provide end-users with information about the environmental impact of waste batteries and electrical equipment, the meaning of the crossed-out wheeled-bin symbol displayed on our products, and the take-back arrangements available to them.
  • Maintain accurate records of the batteries and electrical equipment we place on the market and report this information to the appropriate environment agency.

3. Free take-back service

Energy2 Ltd offers a free take-back service for end-users of the equipment we have supplied. Under this service:

  • Customers may return waste batteries and waste electrical equipment originally supplied by Energy2 to us, at no charge, for environmentally responsible recycling and disposal.
  • The service is provided on a like-for-like basis in respect of waste electrical and electronic equipment — where the customer purchases a new product from us, they may return the equivalent waste item it is intended to replace.
  • For industrial batteries supplied by Energy2 (including domestic and commercial battery energy storage systems with a battery weight of 4 kg or more), we will arrange collection of the waste battery from the end-user free of charge in accordance with regulation 32 of the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009.

4. How to use the service

To return a waste battery or item of waste electrical equipment originally supplied by Energy2:

  1. Contact us at [email protected] or on 0800 112 6345 with details of the equipment to be collected, including the original system serial number where known.
  2. We will confirm collection arrangements and provide written instructions for the safe preparation of the item prior to collection.
  3. Do not attempt to dispose of a lithium battery in household waste, kerbside recycling, or by any other informal means. Lithium batteries can present a serious fire and chemical hazard if damaged, short-circuited or disposed of incorrectly.

5. Safe handling and storage prior to collection

Whilst awaiting collection, customers should:

  • Keep the waste battery in a dry, well-ventilated location away from combustible materials and direct sunlight.
  • Avoid further mechanical impact, deformation, or exposure to water or other liquids.
  • Where the battery shows any sign of damage, leakage, swelling, discolouration, abnormal heat, smoke or odour, contact Energy2 immediately on 0800 112 6345 for urgent guidance and, where necessary, the local fire and rescue service on 999.

Energy2 will provide further safety guidance specific to each system at the point of collection.

6. What happens to the waste we collect

All waste batteries and waste electrical equipment collected by Energy2 are transported to, and processed at, appropriately authorised and regulated treatment, recycling or waste management facilities operating in accordance with all applicable UK environmental legislation, including the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 (SI 2016/1154).

Damaged, swelling, leaking or otherwise defective lithium-ion batteries are classified as dangerous goods under UN 3480 / UN 3481, Class 9 (Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods). Where transport of such batteries is required, Energy2 uses carriers approved under the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) and operates in accordance with the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009.

Energy2 Ltd is committed to:

  • Diverting waste batteries and electrical equipment from landfill wherever this is technically and lawfully possible.
  • Maximising the recovery of valuable materials (including lithium, iron phosphate, copper, aluminium, steel and plastics) for use as secondary raw materials.
  • Ensuring that all waste is handled, transported, treated and disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

7. The crossed-out wheeled-bin symbol

Where our products or their batteries are marked with the crossed-out wheeled-bin symbol, this indicates that the item must not be disposed of with general household or commercial waste at the end of its useful life. Instead, the item should be returned to Energy2 under this take-back service, or to another appropriately authorised collection point, so that the materials it contains can be recovered and recycled in line with the WEEE Regulations and the Batteries Regulations.

8. Records and reporting

Energy2 Ltd maintains records of the quantity and type of batteries and electrical equipment placed on the market, and of waste batteries and waste electrical equipment collected and treated, in accordance with the WEEE Regulations and the Batteries Regulations. These records are reported to the appropriate UK environment agency at the intervals required by law.
